STEM

Central Elementary School is proud to announce that we are expanding our integration of STEM!  The "E" is bolded, larger, and underlined to emphasize our focus on engineering, however we will also incorporate the other components of STEM (science, technology, and math) throughout our students' learning experiences.  We will continue to utilize the EiE curriculum, as well as other STEM resources that will support our students as critically thinking problem solvers!

See our brochure here (English) or here (Spanish).

About STEM

What is STEM? It's shorthand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. These are the core, and interrelated, disciplines likely to drive our economic engine in the future. Careers in these fields are growing faster than any others and preparing our students to fill them is important. North Carolina, and Orange County Schools, are committed to providing the best education in each of the STEM areas.
  • SCIENCE: Science seeks to answer questions about the natural world through observation and/or experimentation. Science uses this information to make predictions and inferences. Math is the language of science and science supports advances in engineering and technology.
  • TECHNOLOGY: Technology refers to those things built, created, modified or used to solve a problem in human life. As the term is used in common language, technology uses both math and science and is, in turn, used to advance science, math and engineering.
  • ENGINEERING: Engineering is the process of solving problems within a set of design constraints. Engineering applies science, math and technology to solve problems and is, in turn, used to solve problems that arise in those fields. Math is the language of engineering.
  • MATH: Mathematics is concerned with the logic of numbers, shape, quantities, and arrangement. Math is also called the science of patterns. Science, technology, and engineering are all dependent on math. Math is the language of STEM.

So…

  • Science ASKS the QUESTIONS
  • Technology PROVIDES the TOOLS
  • Engineering SOLVES the PROBLEMS
  • Math PROVIDES the LANGUAGE

FAQs About the EiE Program

Children are born engineers—they are fascinated with building, with taking things apart, and with how things work.  The Engineering is Elementary (EiE) project fosters engineering and technological literacy among elementary school students and educators.

EiE has created a research-based, standards-driven, and classroom-tested curriculum that integrates engineering and technology concepts and skills with elementary science topics. EiE lessons not only promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning in grades 1-5, but also connect with literacy and social studies.
